KwaMaqoma – In a dramatic development last week, murder charges against Vuyani Khahlana, one of the two men accused of killing Zintle Takane, were withdrawn in the KwaMaqoma Magistrate’s Court on April 17. The case has since been referred to the High Court, with indictment proceedings scheduled for June 10.

Khahlana, who had been out on bail under strict conditions, walked free after prosecutors announced they would not proceed with charges at this stage, citing insufficient evidence. Meanwhile, his co-accused, Sakhumzi Mhaga, remains in custody as the state continues its case against him.
The decision to withdraw the charges triggered significant public outcry. Takane’s family and community members, who had filled the courtroom in hopes of a trial date, expressed frustration and disappointment.
The matter will now proceed in the High Court, where a formal indictment is expected to determine the next steps in the case.
In response to the court’s decision, gender rights activists have pledged to intensify protests, calling for transparency and justice in Takane’s name.
OurNews will continue to follow the case closely and provide updates as more information becomes available.
