Fort Beaufort, 26 July 2024 – The Fort Beaufort Magistrate Court has denied bail for Vuyani Pangaman Khahlani, who, along with Sakhumzi Mhaga, is accused of the murder of Zintle Takane. The decision was delivered by Magistrate N. Mafungwa, who cited the lack of exceptional circumstances justifying Khahlani’s release from detention.
Magistrate Mafungwa emphasized the strong case presented by the state and the seriousness of the charges, suggesting that the gravity of the situation could provoke Khahlani to flee. Additionally, Khahlani is accused of plotting to kill the lead investigator, Nokuthula Gazi, as testified by Constable Aviwe Ntozini during the bail hearing. Furthermore, Khahlani allegedly contacted a witness, a former colleague, which raised concerns about potential witness tampering.
The magistrate also referenced two petitions submitted by the community of Raymond Mhlaba, expressing concerns that Khahlani’s release might disturb public peace. The case has drawn significant public interest, with many in the community closely following the proceedings.
Zandile Tengela of the Raymond Mhlaba Youth For Change welcomed the judgment, stating that it sends a strong message to the community that law still prevails in South Africa and will serve as a deterrent.
The charges stem from the early June 2024 murder of Zintle Takane, whose body was found buried in a shallow grave. Takane, along with the accused, was employed by the Department of Labour and Employment in KwaMaqoma. The alleged motive for the murder is linked to Takane’s knowledge of corrupt activities involving Khahlani and Mhaga with a certain company. It is also reported that Takane was in a relationship with Mhaga.
The court’s decision to deny bail underscores the severity of the case and the ongoing commitment to ensuring justice for Zintle Takane.
