In the heart of Upper Mngqesha Location, Dimbaza, a group of young girls with a passion for netball has risen to become a force to be reckoned with in the sport. Their journey, however, has not been without its challenges.
Founded in 2014 by Luyanda Kilani, a dedicated and visionary individual, the team was established to provide a positive outlet for young people and to promote healthy lifestyles. But more specifically, the aim was to rescue the girls from the scourge of substance abuse and teenage pregnancy that had begun to afflict the community.

With a modest start of just 10 girls, the team has grown exponentially over the years, now boasting a strong squad of 35 members, divided into seniors, juniors, and under-13s.
Kilani, who has been instrumental in shaping the lives of these young athletes, recalls the early days. “We faced numerous challenges, including limited resources, lack of facilities, and stiff competition from established teams. However, our determination and commitment to providing opportunities for these talented youngsters kept us going.”
Through sheer hard work and perseverance, the team has overcome these obstacles to achieve remarkable success. With an impressive haul of over 15 trophies, they have made their mark in local and regional tournaments.
One of their most memorable victories was in the semi-finals of the prestigious Plettenberg Bay Woza Woza tournament, where they faced off against a top-ranked team from the Western Cape. Despite the odds, the team’s unity, focus, and strategic gameplay secured a thrilling win.
So, what’s the secret to their success? According to Kilani, it’s the team’s commitment to developing their players both on and off the field. “We’ve created a supportive environment that fosters growth, discipline, and camaraderie. Our players are not just teammates; they’re a family.”
The team’s impact extends far beyond the netball court. They’ve become a source of pride for the local community, inspiring countless young aspiring athletes to pursue their dreams. By providing a positive outlet for young people, the team has helped to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce the risk of substance abuse and teenage pregnancy.
As the team continues to soar to new heights, their story serves as a testament to the power of dedication, hard work, and community spirit. These young netball stars are not just champions on the court; they’re beacons of hope and inspiration for generations to come.
