Alice, Eastern Cape – The bail application for the accused in the Kungawo Nyhweba murder case has been postponed to 19 August 2024. This decision was made yesterday to allow Andiswa Khwetana, one of the three accused, time to consult with her new Legal Aid representative. Khwetana, 39, recently ended her relationship with Advocate Charles Stamper, who previously represented all three accused.
Sources close to the case revealed to OurNews that Khwetana’s family advised her to seek independent legal representation, believing that Stamper’s primary focus is on accused number one, Xolani Gotyi, who is financing the defense. The family fears that Khwetana’s interests might be compromised if she continues with the same advocate.
The case has drawn significant public attention, following the tragic death of 19-year-old Kungawo Nyhweba, whose body was found burnt after a six-day search in Makhanda. The community is outraged, with many calling for the accused to be denied bail.
The court will resume bail proceedings on 19 August 2024, with Khwetana set to testify. The shift in legal representation could impact the direction of the case as the community and Nyhweba’s family continue to seek justice.
