Ngqeleni, Eastern Cape – A police sergeant is currently in stable condition at a local hospital after heavily armed men opened fire on law enforcement officials who had responded to a robbery at the Ngqeleni Post Office on Wednesday, 7 June 2023, just before midday.
Authorities received a report of an ongoing robbery at the Ngqeleni Post Office around 11:45 am. Upon arrival at the scene, the police were met with a hail of bullets as approximately seven armed suspects unleashed a barrage of gunfire. Despite the valiant efforts of the officers, the assailants managed to escape with an undisclosed amount of cash in a white Isuzu bakkie.
During the exchange of gunfire, a police sergeant sustained a gunshot wound to the lower body and was immediately rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention. In addition to the robbery charge, the suspects now face an attempted murder charge due to the injuries sustained by the officer.
A short while after the incident, authorities discovered the abandoned getaway bakkie in Mabheshe Location. The investigation is ongoing, and the police are urging anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact the nearest police station.
