Weekend Wrap | Eight initiates have died in EC, Day Zero in Nelson Mandela Bay, Sri Lanka President to Resign

EIGHT INITIATES HAVE DIED IN THE EASTERN CAPE

Eight (8) initiates have died in the Eastern Cape, OR Tambo District since the beginning of the initiation season.
About 40 000 boys have undergone initiation and at least 8 of them have passed on.

It is blamed on illegal initiation schools that have become a norm.
The Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs says illegal initiation schools in the province are thriving more than legal ones.

“Our findings are that generally in most of the schools they are illegal. Some traditional surgeons are not registered,” said Fikile Xasa.

“That was our biggest problem. The illegal schools were more than the legal ones. Some boys have already died.

“The law itself that we were following up on is not understood by everybody — customary initiation act. The structures that have been establish do not know how to enforce the law.”

SA IS SITTING ON A TICKING TIME BOMB: SAID YOUNG COMMUNIST LEAGUE

The Young Communist League of South Africa (YCL) in the North West says SA is sitting on a ticking time-bomb of the increasing number of youth unemployment which may result in the collapse of the country soon.

The league was delivering this message during the SACP’s provincial council ahead of the party’s 15th National Congress which will take place later this month.

“Out of the 34.5% that is the national unemployment rate, the most affected people are young people. It’s a point of concern for us. So, it means if it’s young people who are highly concentrated on the unemployment radar, we are sitting with a ticking time-bomb”, said YCL’s Tsietsi Letshebe.

SRI LANKA’S PRESIDENT TO RESIGN

Sri Lankan President, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, is planning to step down as the country’s president on 13 July 2022, the Speaker of the country’s parliament said on Saturday.

This is after half of Sri Lankan citizens took to the streets in protest, demanding the removal of their president from office. They also barged into the residence of the president in Colombo, the country’s capital, on Saturday, 09 July 2022, demanding that he resigns.
A few years ago, Sri Lanka’s economy was strong enough to provide most people with jobs and financial security. It is now in shambles, relying on aid from India and other counties as its leaders desperately try to negotiate a bailout from International Monetary Fund.

Crowds of flag-waving demonstrators enraged by Rajapaksa’s handling of the country’s crisis in decades, gathered in front of the president’s official state residence and stormed past security officers and marched into the residence, despite heavy armed security.

The president is said to be taken to a safer location, with claims saying he is near the airport, though this cannot be confirmed. Protester dismantled several police barricades in Colombo’s government district before breaking into government buildings on Saturday. According to a witness, police fires shots into the air but were unable to stop the crowd from encircling the presidential residence.
